Facts
- Synchronised Swimming began as a sport for men in the 1800s. But only women are eligible to compete at the Olympic Games.
- At the first three modern Olympic Games, Swimming took place in open water - in seas, rivers and lakes. A pool was used for the first time at the London 1908 Games, where the rules were finally standardised.
- The swimming pool for the London 1908 Olympic Games was built inside the atletic tracks.

Swimming
Olympic races take place in a 50m long pool divided into 10 lanes, with only the middle eight lanes used by the swimmers.
The swimmer who touches the pool wall first at the end of the race wins. Unless it is a freestyle event, competitors have to use a particular swimming stroke:
Breaststroke, Butterfly or Backstroke.
Diving
Competitors jump head-first into a pool from a three-metre springboard or a 10-metre solid platform. They perform a series of twists and somersaults before they hit the water. The aim is to win as many points as possible from a panel of judges who assess each dive for difficulty and style of execution.
Synchronise swimming
A women's only sport, competitors perform short routines to music in the pool. Judges award points on technical performance and creativity.
Water Polo
The objective is to score more goals than the other team by putting the ball in the back of the net at the end of the pool. Each team only has 30 seconds to score before the ball is passed to the opposition.
Archery
Venue: Lord's Cricket Ground, London

Road
On the road there are two events: Road Racing and Time Trial.The Road Race is 239km (150 miles) for men and 120km (75 miles) for women. The competitors all start together and the first past the line is the winner.The Time Trial is against the clock over a shorter distance: riders start 90 seconds apart and whoever completes the course fastest wins.
Track
Riders race anti-clockwise round a banked, 250m (273yd) indoor track.
Mountain Biking
Mountain Bike takes place over rough and hilly countryside, with races over 40-50km for men, and 30-40km for women. The riders start together and must complete a set number of laps of the course. The winner is the first past the finish line.
BMX
BMX (Bicycle Moto Cross) races are held on short outdoor tracks that include jumps, bumps and tight banked corners. Eight riders compete in each heat, with the top four qualifying for the next round. Races take about 40 seconds.
Equestrian

- At the Olympic Games, horses must be the same nationality as their riders, and each horse must be at least seven years old.
- HRH Princess Anne, the daughter of HM Queen Elizabeth II, was a member of the GB Eventing team at the Montreal 1976 Games. Her own daughter, Zara, became European Eventing Champion in 2005, World Eventing Champion in 2006.
- Equestrian has been part of the Olympic programme since Stockholm 1912.

Dressage
In each round the riders have to perform a Dressage Test, made up of a series of movements to be performed by the horse. The movements are set in a compulsory order for the first two rounds but, for the third and final round, the rider chooses what he or she will show the judges, and the programme is set to music.
Jumping
Rider and horse must complete a course of 15 fences. If the horse hits the fences or the rider does not complete the course within a set time, the rider will be penalised with 'faults'. The winner is the rider with the fewest faults.
Eventing
The Eventing competition (formerly called the Three Day Event) takes place over four days. Days One and Two are Dressage, Day Three is Cross Country and Day four is Jumping.
Fencing

Rowing
There are two types of Rowing at the Olympic Games: Sweep Rowing and Sculling. Sweep Rowers use a single oar.
